MEET SHERRY: One of the winners from our Dear Fear Encouragement Challenge. Based out of South Carolina, Sherry is a nurse, an author, a mother, and a wife. She describes herself as an "every day, average, regular girl, who just happened to find God". We beg to differ after reading Sherry's blog, she's not an average girl, she's a woman filled with equal parts passion and purpose for God.
What should we know about your story?
I’ve gone to church most of my adult life. I attended service regularly, paid my tithes and offerings. I even worked in the church and did everything I was told to do. I was a good person but there was still something missing. I did not find out what that thing was until I decided to form a relationship with God. A personal relationship through prayer and reading His word. Very slowly my life began to change. And after a few months the miraculous happened, God began to respond to me. From that moment, my entire life changed. Now share the details of my testimony every chance I get because I want everyone to know how real God is.
What does being a "woman of faith" mean to you?
To me, being a woman of faith means that not only do I believe in God and His word but I live, act and speak those things that I believe. Living my life as an example. Encouraging, motivating and inspiring those around me into a closer relationship with God. I also try to be there for people, I help others when I can and I spend a lot of my time interceding on the behalf of others in prayer. As Christians that’s the least we can do is to pray for each other.
How did you get into the world of Christian writing and blogging?
I got into the world of Christian writing and blogging with a simple word from God. One day on a walk, I heard, “write a book”. It was startling and clear. I was confused because I had never written anything before. After many prayers and confirmation from the Lord, I wrote my first book, My Extraordinary Walk. And I have been writing ever since. I began blogging because I enjoyed writing so much and I knew I still needed practice. So, for me blogging has been a way of encouraging others and sharpening my writing skills.
How do you listen to the voice of God for direction?
I listen to the voice of God for direction, by spending time with Him. Time spent in prayer and in the Bible is time with Him. And I am always listening for His response. You may not get an audible voice, most of the time I listen to how I feel, what I feel led to do and sometimes I will receive fresh insight on something after praying. I have also learned to pay attention to my dreams. You have to be open to however God decides to respond to you.
He may even use another person. For example, a friend of mine came to me with the idea, that I may want to start a blog. I had never thought about it before but when she said it, something felt right about it and I knew I needed to start a blog. I believe that God speaks to all of us but we just need to listen and respond when he does. And remember, the more we respond to Him, the more He responds to us. (James 4:8)
What is the biggest misconception of being Christian?
To me, the biggest misconception about being a Christian is that you have to be perfect. I consider this life to be a journey, a walk with God. Sometimes we make mistakes, we stumble and fall. But as long as we call out to Him, God will always be there to help us back up and to continue the rest of the way with us. Remember, we are human, we are not perfect and God doesn’t expect us to be. Even though we strive to live a life that is pleasing to Him. My advice is to be the best person that you can be and let Him do the rest.
Where do you draw inspiration from your writing?
My inspiration for writing is my desire for everyone to know how real God is. When I first ‘found’ God, I felt like I discovered a huge secret. I was experiencing things that I didn’t even know were possible. When I write, my goal is to share God plainly, so that other people like me get it, and become curious enough to seek an intimate relationship with God. So that they too can have their own experiences and encounters with God.
Are you a work-by-yourself kind of person, or a person who loves working surrounded by people?
I am definitely a work- by- myself- kind of person. I can focus harder and get more done. And it doesn’t require much interaction with others. I think that’s one reason why I like writing so much.
How would you describe your personal style?
I really don’t think I have much of a personal style, but I do love natural things, neutral colors, natural hair, jewelry and accessories made of wood, natural stones, African art, etc.
I think I am weird in that way I don’t have any favorite or must-have items, I don’t even have a favorite color. But I do love books, if I were stranded on a deserted island as long as I had plenty of books, I believe that I would be just fine until help arrived.
Music is a big part of my relationship with God. I love worship music. Right now, I am listening to a lot of William Murphy, Travis Greene, Tasha Cobbs and there is this song called Let All the Earth by Kita Williams. Their songs are wonderful and can take me deep in to worship.Favorite Bible verse?
This one is hard, I love so much of the Bible, it is my favorite book. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve read it, but if I had to narrow it down to one verse it would be… Matthew 7:7 ask, seek and knock. This verse has been proven true in my life over and over again and it is one I share often when talking about the Lord.
What advice do you have for someone who is learning to know God intimately again?
My advice for anyone learning and seeking God is to stay in the Bible, develop and maintain a prayer life. Open your mind, heart, and soul to God an no matter what don’t give up. God is real and in time he will reveal himself to you.
